The Street Support Program operates Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, beginning in May 2026. Prior to beginning this program, we are completing a survey with those experiencing homelessness to better understand how they are accessing services, and where gaps exist. The goal is to use this information to identify common barriers and opportunities to improve how services are delivered across the community.
As a new program, the Street Support Program will continue to evolve based on community need and feedback. Our focus is to provide practical, flexible support to people experiencing homelessness or housing instability in Yellowknife.
Core Focus
At launch, the program is primarily focused on transportation and support to help people attend medical and health-related appointments. This includes:
Providing transportation to and from appointments
Offering support and advocacy during appointments, when requested
Providing meals and clothing to those in need
Planning occasional free community meals
Additional Supports (as the program develops)
Over time, the program may also include:
Supporting access to safe and appropriate housing, including transitional, supportive, market, and Indigenous-led options, as well as assistance with applications and communication with housing providers
Coordinating with home communities when requested or appropriate
Supporting discharge planning from hospitals, corrections, and other systems
Helping people access additional health, wellness, treatment, and harm reduction services
Supporting access to culturally relevant healing, traditional practices, and community-based programs
Assisting with basic needs such as identification and technology access
Supporting access to income assistance, benefits, employment readiness, and training opportunities
Encouraging social connection through cultural, recreational, and peer-based activities
Working alongside Elders, peer support workers, and community service providers to coordinate care
